Udara’s 3rd Anniversary

Can you believe that Udara just had its 3rd anniversary? The last three years since the opening of Udara have passed incredibly fast. Let’s take a look how it all started and how we celebrated Udara’s birthday this year.

How it all started

From the first vision of a creative mind and a 3D model from cardboard and wooden sticks, it took two years of construction until Udara could open its doors for yoga and detox retreat guests, yoga students and visitors for the Spa and Organic Ocean restaurant. During the construction period there were more than 100 workers on site to bring life to the unique architecture and design of the resort. While the hotel was being built, there was even a small Warung in one of the hotel rooms, where the workers could buy snacks and drinks. On the grounds of what is now Udara used to be a coral farm with an octagon structure right on the same place where we now have the main Yoga shala. Visiting the construction site was like being in an adventure park! You could discover hidden corners in the Spa caves where workers were carving statues, you had to climb up wooden ladders to get to the upper floors and marvel about how everything would look like once finished.

The property was designed by the German and Jepara Indonesian owners who created the unique architecture and blended in the traditional Javanese Joglo style with a natural ambiance. Guests are surrounded by the textures and color of nature, unpainted wood, natural stone, lush green garden and rough-cut stone.

Life at Udara

The first three years of Udara have already been quite an adventure! Since the beginning, we welcome guests from all over the world who do not only want to spend a relaxing holiday by the beach, but also focus on health and wellbeing during their stay with Yoga and meditation classes, Spa and healthy food options. Shortly after opening, we already had a first retreat group from Germany and since then opened our space both for individual guests and groups who hosted their own retreats.

In June 2018, we started our first detox programs and until now supported hundreds of people on their journey for better health and balance for body and mind. The Yoga schedule has grown into a program with an enormous variety of daily classes in different styles taught by experienced local and international teachers. In the last two years the team has also put a lot of effort into creating unique events at Udara that draw in both tourists and expats which created a beautiful community. Sound Healing has become an essential part of most events, from Yin Yoga or breathwork with sound healing to floating in aerial hammocks or in the Watsu pool while receiving a sound bath. Monthly Cacao & kirtan ceremonies and ecstatic dance on Sunday mornings have grown from an insider tip to well-known events in Canggu area and beyond.

In the middle of a flourishing period, the Coronavirus put an unexpected halt to tourism in Bali and we are eagerly waiting for international guests to arrive again in 2021. In the meantime, we welcome both locals and expats who are in Bali to come to Udara.

Celebrating the Anniversary

While we currently face challenging times with significantly decreased business demand, all team members are eager to keep the spirit of Udara alive. Celebrating the anniversary with a staff party has already become a tradition that nobody wanted to miss. Funny games, karaoke, performances and of course a birthday cake and Balinese food made the evening of this year’s anniversary unforgettable. Each staff member plays a valuable role at Udara: gardeners, housekeeping and engineering staff, cooks, waiters, back and front office team members, Yoga teachers and management – all together create one big family.
