Our Gut – The Foundation for our Health and Wellbeing

By Violetta Petrenko, Wellness Coach and Yoga Teacher at Udara

Modern nutritionists and doctors would say that feeling well and healthy depends greatly on our gut health. Hippocrates, the famous ancient Greek doctor already stated that all disease begins in the gut. In fact, a burdened colon can cause many troubles and diseases: Headaches, sleeping disorders, fatigue, bad breath, sluggish digestion, bloating, skin reactions, allergies and even serious diseases like cancer may be linked to toxicity and blockages in the colon.

How we can keep our colon healthy?

1. First – Eat healthy. Certain foods are heavy to digest and can cause blockages in the colon, including:

  • Red meat
  • Fried foods
  • Refined sugar
  • Processed carbohydrates
  • Alcohol
  • Coffee

If you try to limit these food categories you will help your colon and your body in general to be healthier and to feel better.

2. Adjust your Lifestyle

The second step in improving the colon health is to make some lifestyle changes and eliminate behaviors that affect the colon health, such as:

  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Excessive sitting/sedentary work environment
  • Lack of exercise

3. Eat more fiber

Dietary fiber speeds up the process of waste elimination, helping to reduce constipation and gut inflammation. With enough fiber, your colon reduces the strain and pressure it exerts on the abdomen and veins, reducing the risk of:

  • Hernias
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Varicose veins
  • Colon cancer
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure

Some healthy sources of dietary fiber to consider introducing to your diet are:

  • Fruits and Vegetables
  • Bran and Cereals
  • Nuts and Seeds

4. Drink more Water

Dehydration can contribute to a lack of healthy bowel movements. How much water you should drink depends on many reasons – the climate where you live, your metabolism, genetics and personal body features.

5. Get more Exercise

It is important to take time giving your body the exercise it needs to function properly, to keep the PH balance of your body alkaline and to tone the muscles of your body.

How can we clean our colon?

The body’s natural ability to cleanse itself and get rid of toxins and waste material might be compromised due to several factors. There are several ways to clean the colon, improve its function and eliminate toxins. One method involves taking bowel-clearing laxatives, powders or supplements, using enemas or drinking herbal teas to release colon waste and discharge toxins. A second method is called colonic irrigation or colon hydrotherapy, in which an apparatus flushes out the colon by sending gallons of water into the body through a tube inserted into a person’s rectum. All of these methods should only be done in combination with a detox program.

Colon Hydrotherapy is a bowel washing procedure that facilitates the removal of toxic and residual waste material from the colon with a special machine, usually done in medical institutions or Health Spas. It helps the processes of cleansing the body and improves bowel function, especially with functional disorders or diseases.

This procedure cleanses the colon by irrigation. It is similar to an enema (which we will explain in more detail in a later article), but more water is used during Colon Hydrotherapy and the procedure is supervised by a trained practitioner with medical background.

The Benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy

  • improvement of intestinal motility, elimination of constipation
  • cleansing the intestines of toxins and residual, stuck waste material
  • weight loss
  • improving immunity by stimulating the lymph clusters lying in the walls of the colon
  • lowering the risk of colon cancer
  • maintaining a normal level of PH-balance in the blood, which helps to cope with frequent drowsiness or headaches
  • improving the absorption of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

However, for colonic irrigation there are some contradictions which are symptoms or health conditions that makes it unsafe or inadvisable – like anal fissure, colostomy, rectal bleeding etc. If you have any serious disease in your digestive system you need to consult with your doctor first.

We Care for Your Wellbeing

At the beginning of your detox program you will have a consultation with one of our wellness coaches who will support you during your stay and explain you in detail the schedule for your detox program and all the treatments and activities which are included.

In our Detox programs at Udara we include enemas and colonic irrigations as a part of the cleansing process. Enemas (self-administrated colon cleanse) are included in each Detox program, but colonic irrigation is only part of the programs of 1 week or longer.

Especially when you have never done a detox program before, Udara is a great place to start your journey to health, balance and wellbeing.
