Food for thought

By Kirk Douglas, coach, yoga teacher & optimum nutritionist

Food is a huge part of our lifestyle and wise choices need to be made. We eat food to fuel our bodies, to provide our internal organs with the nutrients, vitamins and minerals needed to function at a level of optimum health. You are either eating to heal yourself or kill yourself.  As adults, we  have the freedom of choice. Each day is a new opportunity to make positive changes. Choose to eat healthy, have a consistent exercise routine and choose change.

Introduction

SOME FACTS

Did you know that 90% of all sickness and disease is nutritionally related? Creating Imbalances, intolerances and deficiencies within the body.

  • Eating foods that give our bodies the wrong instructions risking development of disease
  • Lack of micronutrients, vitamins and minerals to support your body and immune system
  • Food and sugar consumption that cause spikes in insulin levels relating to serious disease
  • Consuming high level of saturated fats and unknowingly eating to many trans fats
  • Not understanding that what we eat is central to our health and the cause of conditions
  • 95% of serotonin (happy hormone)  is created in the gut, an unhealthy gut due to poor diet equates unhealthy moods

There are 2 reasons we become unwell:

  1. You have a weak or compromised immune system (low levels of antibodies)
  2. Your body is flooded or overloaded with toxins (High levels of bacteria)

If you add theses elements together the equation looks like this:

  • Susceptibility to health conditions (High levels of toxins increase the risk of disease)
  • Susceptibility to sickness & disease (A low immune system leaves us open to viruses)

It’s a simple science that is more than often complicated by conflicting and ambiguous information.

Our every physiological function depends on enzymes, enzymes are required to manufacture molecules, produce energy, and create cell structures. Toxins damage enzymes and thus undermine countless bodily functions—inhibiting the production of hemoglobin in the blood, for example, or lower the body’s capacity to prevent the free-radical damage that accelerates sickness, disease and aging.

We are informed by medical professionals all the time that ill health and diseases are hereditary, we have an increased risk because of our family background, our father or mother, grandfather or grandmother had heart disease, or another condition, therefore we are in a higher risk category.

Oh yes, us humans like to hang on to and use these excuses, an excuse for not taking control and action to apply the changes needed to prevent such hereditary labels. The direction we all take in life is a choice!

  • The food we choose eat
  • The lifestyle we choose to follow
  • The Habits we choose to hold on to
  • The exercise we choose to do or not do

The fact of the matter is that we get to choose! 90% of the time. So let’s simplify this!

If you choose to follow the same patterns or lifestyle, habits, routines and nutrition choices passed down through the generations, then yes, of course you’re likely to end up with the same or similar illness diseases that your mother, father or grandfather may have had.

Keep on doing what has always been done and you will keep on getting the same results. This is not only applied to nutrition but also of lifestyle choices.

As adults, we  have the freedom of choice. Each day is a new opportunity to make positive changes. Choose to eat healthy, have a consistent exercise routine and choose change.

Any dream or goal in life needs an action plan, it takes study, research, investigation, strategising, preparation and organization. We must take action and consistent daily steps towards these goals, create a vision of the healthy life you wish to lead by changing not only your life but also those of your children. I hear more and more everyday people looking for more freedom, independence, their own business or lifestyle etc. The same method needs to be applied to create a healthy mind, and body.

It is said that the 4 things we must have to succeed or be content are:

  1. Health
  2. Love
  3. Happiness
  4. Wealth

The number 1 key to the following three begins with your HEALTH. If you are not healthy this will impact the following three. Can you truly love if firstly you don’t love yourself, by nurturing your body, mind and soul? Can you be truly happy if you cannot show and receive love and can you work on your business, career whatever it may be that brings you wealth without happiness?

Some of the wealthiest people in the world are some of the most unhappiest and unfulfilled people. If given the chance or opportunity to be rid of disease or a major illness, they would give every penny to get back their health, live longer and be happy again. We all know that no amount of money or prestige can buy any of the above.

We literally are what we eat

Food is a huge part of our lifestyle and wise choices need to be made. We eat food to fuel our bodies, to provide our internal organs with the nutrients, vitamins and minerals needed to function at a level of optimum health. You are either eating to heal yourself or kill yourself.

Cooking methods and food types are passed down through the generations, from what grandma and mum cook at home to what you buy from the school canteen. These traditions start from routines like infant school having milk mornings, orange juice being poured at the breakfast table. White toast with jam or marmalade, bowls of commercial cereals, croissants, pasties, paratha, arepa or churros depending on your background or culture.

Breakfast is derived from the term “breaking the fast” Have you been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Marketing strategies use terms such as “breakfast of champions” to sell commercial cereals loaded with sugar that hold very little if any nutritional value at all.

In fact 70-80% of promoted breakfast products are some of the unhealthiest things you could possibly start your day with. We are all familiar with the latest hype about fasted cardio and fasting. The first thing we choose to eat in the morning will determine how our bodies react throughout the day, how you will feel mentally, internally and externally.

FUN FACT: Although serotonin (happy hormone) is manufactured in the brain, where it performs its primary functions, 90% of our serotonin supply is found in the digestive tract and in the blood platelets of the small intestine  ………it’s not hard to work out how you feel when you eat poorly!

Below is a helpful list of foods to help feed your body with health fuel and control your cravings.
